Helpers in Mueller: A Sweet Rescue Tale (Tail)

One year ago at the Mueller Dog Run, a neighbor arriving to play with her own pup stumbled upon something unexpected: three dogs who seemed to have been left behind.

What could have been a heartbreaking scene quickly turned into a familiar story about the best of Mueller. Within minutes, neighbors rallied bringing food and water, offering up a safe place to sleep, and later pitching in supplies for the weeks ahead. What started as “just one night” of fostering became six weeks of care for one family, supported by shared responsibility and compassion from our community.

Today, Winnie, Nate, and Besi are thriving!

Meet the Trio

Winnie (formerly Nelly)

Winnie

Winnie found her forever home just days after being rescued from the park. She lucked out with a high-flying couple of frequent travelers. Now she’s a seasoned co-pilot, hopping on their small plane for regular trips between Austin and the Gulf Coast, where beach days have become her new favorite pastime.

Nate

Nate

Nate had the most unique journey of the trio. He quickly found a loving home but slipped his leash the very next morning, showing just how skittish he could be. After a 12-hour search around Mueller, he was found hiding in the bushes near the Southwest Greenway by the same family who had first taken him in. Not long after his big adventure, Nate began losing his vision due to a bacterial infection but thankfully a simple course of antibiotics and eye drops had him feeling good as new. Nate was later adopted by a young man whose energy and temperament matched his own. The two have been inseparable ever since.

Besi (formerly Noah)

The largest and youngest of the bunch, Besi was the last of the three to be adopted. His turn came shortly after Nate’s, when a close friend of Nate’s new owner decided to give him a home.  Now, Nate and Besi get to see each other regularly. They’re weekend walking companions and lifelong pals.

Besi and Nate

Stories like this remind us why we love living here. When challenges arise, Mueller neighbors show up, turning an unfortunate situation into a community win worthy of the cutest story book ending.

Cheers to Winnie, Nate, and Besi, to their foster family, their forever families, and every neighbor who stepped up as a helper along the way.
